Transportation Compliance Specialist

Job Description

PRIMARY PURPOSE: The Transportation Compliance Specialist reports directly to the Director of Compliance and is responsible for insuring regional activities involving transportation is conducted in strict compliance with all applicable federal, state and local requirements. Additionally, this position is responsible for providing field level assistance in the form of announced and unannounced inspections, focused training, accident and incident investigation and regulatory guidance and support. The essential elements of this position include, but are not limited to:

 ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: include the following and other duties may be assigned as needed.

  • Provide technical support on transportation and safety related issues to operations, sales and shared services.
  • Develop and maintain a good relationship with federal, state and local regulatory agencies in the USA.
  • Conduct announced and unannounced inspections at USS facilities and branch locations to review compliance related operational components that include but are not limited to vehicle maintenance files, driver files, transportation related permits/authorities, equipment readiness, driver vehicle inspection reports, time keeping records, and other related transportation records & equipment.
  • Prepare and assist facilities and branch locations for audits and inspections (e.g. US DOT Compliance Reviews, State DOT Compliance Reviews, California BIT inspection).
  • Assist field based operations personnel with the interpretation and implementation of policies and procedures relative to transportation compliance.
  • Assist Corporate Safety & Compliance Department with issues and questions relating to driver, vehicle & facility transportation issues.
  • Participate in the incident/accident investigations when applicable.
  • Assist in the development and delivery of transportation related training programs.
  • Provide expertise if the interpretation of federal, state, local and & company transportation related regulations and policies.
  • Partner with and support Safety Organization

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • This position has no direct report supervisory responsibilities, but does have broad supervisory responsibilities for assigned territory.

Note: This position is subject to periodic quality control checks by a designated Company representative.

Requirements

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor of Arts or Science (Transportation, Logistics, Environmental Science, or comparable area of emphasis) or a college diploma in a related field including law enforcement.
  • 1-3 years of compliance experience

 

 COMPETENCIES:

  • Knowledge of federal and state transportation regulations and standards
  • Excellent communications, writing and presentation skills. Strong ability to investigate and assess transportation and safety incidents.
  • Excellent organizational skills and an ability to work independently and in teams.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by management.

 LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as compliance and safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

 MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to perform simple arithmetic (add, subtract, multiply, and divide). Ability to perform these operations using units of American currency, measurement, weight, and distance.

REASONING ABILITY:

  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

 CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

  • Must have and maintain valid Drivers License

COMPETENCIES:

  • Knowledge of federal and state transportation regulations and standards

 PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to sit, stand and walk, sometimes long distances. The employee is required to reach with hands and arms. The employee may occasionally also stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move between 50 pounds and 150 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision & ability to focus.
